A benefit of working for the Church was that there was opportunity for advancement, whereas you were born into your occupation in the feudal system, and were stuck with it for life.
In the 11th century Pope Gregory VII excommunicated the Holy Roman Emperor, Henry IV. Their disagreement was about who had the right to appoint church officials. Henry was forced to apologize to Pope Gregory. The pope left Henry standing for three days in the snow before he would see him. When things returned to normal, Henry went to Rome and threw the pope out. Gregory was forced into exile, and he died in Salerno in 1085.
My Daily Routine: Monkey the Monk My day consists of doing my daily chores, job, and praying. My chore is to provide hospitality for pilgrims. Us monks have to follow three vows, The Vow of Poverty,The Vow of Chastity, and The Vow of Obedience. We spent the majority of the day praying with the Book of Hours. Although it is not my job, my fellow monks copy manuscripts. This is very important because otherwise the people of the future would not know about these stories. They would be lost today if it was not for my friends!
